Adoption

We're happy that you are interested in providing a home for one of our animals. We hope that this information sheet will help to explain our adoption process — but if you have any questions, please feel welcome to ask a staff member for more details.

Plan to spend as much time as possible becoming acquainted with the animals in our adoption center. Each animal has his or her distinct personality, as do you. Our goal is to assist you in finding your best match for a lifelong companion.

We'll take you outside with the dogs, or bring the cats and small animals into get acquainted areas. Please ask questions — that's why we're here.

We'll ask you to fill out a brief application. An adoption counselor will discuss with you some of the particular needs of the animal you have chosen, and how that animal will fit into your particular home situation. During the course of this discussion, we'll ask you for just a few specific things:

As a courtesy, we'd like to speak with your landlord, and make sure there are no pet policies that you may be unaware of. Please bring that contact information with you. If you own your own home, we will ask to see verification, either through a tax, water or mortgage bill.  Some cities and towns have online taxpayer databases that we can access if you did not bring verification with you.

If you have other animals in the household, please bring information about your veterinarian (the clinic name and phone number are fine) to ensure everyone is up to date on vaccinations (i.e. distemper, rabies...)

We want to help you make the best match for your home. This may require children, other dogs, and all household members to come meet the potential new friend.

Please understand that in order to give our animals the best possible chance for a new home, no animal may be placed on hold. You need to complete the adoption process before the animal can be guaranteed to you.
