Musings from the Smalls Room
By Curry (a rather cute guinea pig!)
I thought it was about time I let the wider world know about my current living situation. I am what you might call between homes at present. Let me introduce myself, my name is Curry and I am currently residing in a very comfortable location, the animal shelter at 1300 West Elm Street Ext. in Brockton. Don’t get me wrong it is a great place, lots going on, great food and all these wonderful humans who come everyday to clean out my current abode. But, I have been here since March, and to be quite honest I am ready for a little peace and quiet. A home with some lovely humans, I am ready to be part of a family.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the hustle and bustle, and there is certainly hustle and bustle in the smalls room right now…….20 guinea pigs and 5 bunnies currently occupy this little space. And like I said I love hanging out with my piggy friends, but it just isn’t quite the same as having a family of one’s own. I currently live next to the other long timer, Oreo, we get along great. It is always nice to rub noses and have a bit of a chat through our cage bars, a little bit like chatting over a garden fence with a neighbor. In fact, the two of us were discussing the new arrivals in the room just the other day.
Typically, when a new pig arrives they end up in a cozy little cage, with a little house, litter box and maybe the odd toy, but suddenly out of the blue A LOT of piggies arrived. They were set up in little exercise pens at the end of the room…...it was very mysterious! Until word spread down our line of cages to me, I have the prime spot near the refrigerator, that these new arrivals were all babies from two pregnant pigs that had been brought in over the summer. WOW, we had one pen of boy pigs, and a second pen with a mom and her two daughters. Then when we thought there was just no more room, four more little brothers arrived (their mom has the luxury of a cage just above mine, taking a well-deserved break if you ask me!) And wouldn’t you know it two of those new little boys have already found a home, I am thrilled for them, but it does make the rest of us a little sad, because at the end of the day that is what we all want.
Anyway, I am going to leave it there for this week. I hope you liked hearing about life in the smalls room, perhaps you might even consider reading more about us on the available animal’s page of the shelter’s website. Just so you know there are also a couple of gerbils and a cockatiel, they live out in the hallway, but I wanted to let you know we aren’t the only small animals at the shelter.
