Kittens - APCSM’s Hidden animals
Most of you are aware that the shelter has kittens available nearly all year round, but what you probably don’t know is how many kittens come through the shelter doors. In 2023, we had 276 kittens in foster homes that were then adopted to loving families. You will not often see kittens on our adoptable animal page as they live off site, in foster homes, and only come into the shelter when they are about to be adopted out. You can fill in a kitten adoption application, which is then kept on file and when we have a new litter ready to go you will get a call.
We are always in need of foster homes for our kittens, any shelter is not an ideal environment for a pregnant cat, motherless newborns, or even 5 week old kittens that need socializing. To fill this void we have a team of foster volunteers. Perhaps they take a single kitten who just needs a bit more play time before going home, or bottle feed around the clock the motherless babies that come in, and we always need homes willing to take a pregnant mom and look after her and her babies after they are born. You may foster a kitten for a week or have a mom and kittens for close to 3 months. Once babies are born you can check in with shelter staff whenever you have any questions or concerns. All kittens are brought to the shelter for regular vaccinations. All our male kittens are neutered before being adopted, but the girls will be placed in homes and then go to a vet for their spay appointment. All of this is covered by the shelter.
The shelter also can provide you with kitten formula, bottles, litter trays, toys, beds, blankets and food. On this note we are always in desperate need of wet kitten food and you will see that we are dedicating February to building up a supply of this type of food and non clumping litter to get ahead of the tsunami of kittens that flow in once we hit the spring.
