Musings from the Small’s Room by Rudy (a gigantic, lovable rogue)
I bet you all thought that we weren’t going to write anything, or that the room was finally empty! Unfortunately, we are still super full in the small’s room, we are just a little delayed as we all had a little too much fun ringing in the New Year. I know you are all very surprised to hear that us rabbits and guinea pigs know how to have a good time, just because we are all small and cute doesn’t mean we don’t have a wild and crazy side too. After watching some sporadic displays of fireworks through our windows we all toasted the end of 2021 and welcomed in 2022.
Just like you we are all hoping that 2022 will see a return to more normal life, but if it doesn’t, we will do our best to go with the flow. I mean truthfully, we just all want a new loving family and surely that is available whatever else is going on in the world. Gonzo and I were talking the other day and he is anticipating snow, said he could smell it in the air (always thought he was a little odd, fun chap to talk to just a little odd!) We still have a wide variety of types and ages of guinea pigs in the room, which means that if you are in the market for a new little pet, we probably have one to suit your growing family.
Snickers asked if I would do a special shout out for him, he was born in one of our foster homes over the summer. His sisters, brother and mom were all adopted out pretty quickly, which has left him feeling a little lonely. He loves to chat to his neighbors and is often found hanging out in his oatmeal tube. Of course, word got round that I was going to write about Snickers, so Drumstick wanted in on the action too. He came to the shelter back in September with a little buddy, but unfortunately, they didn’t seem to get along and while his buddy was adopted a while ago Drumstick is still with us. He is one of the friendliest pigs you will meet, always coming to the side of his cage for a quick stroke and to see what snacks are being given out. He is even known to wander around the small’s room, saying hi to everyone who lives down on the floor in the room, always a pleasure to share a little gossip with him. Two of our newest guinea pigs are female, which always causes a bit of a stir among the males in the room, Nala and Sarabi are wonderful, a little on the shy side, but that is to be expected when you first move in here (we can be a bit overwhelming). They love each other’s company, but I did overhear them chatting to Toffee and Slack the other day as they are in the cages closest to them.
Wait a minute I hear Spazz yelling from the hallway, something about don’t forget to mention a very sweet gerbil still waiting for a home, perfect first pet, sleek black coat, seriously he is really selling himself!
Penelope was supposed to be having a meet, so hopefully she has found a new home, and Peter went home last week, leaving just myself (Rudy), and Gonzo in the rabbit department. Paws crossed it stays that way for a while.
In case you were wondering why there are pictures of guinea pigs and rabbits with newspapers at the top of our blog it is because we are desperately short of them! Obviously not the rabbits or guinea pigs but the newspaper!! Not just as reading material, but as lining for our litter boxes. In a world where less and less people are reading actual paper newspapers, we are finding it a bit of a struggle to keep a steady supply at the shelter. So, if you have some at home, or you know your neighbor reads the paper perhaps you would consider donating them to us, we would be eternally grateful.
Happy New Year to all, and don’t forget to tell your family, friends, neighbors and even complete strangers about a rag tag bunch of small animals that are hoping for a home this year.
