Musings from the Small’s Room By ….
The news you have all been waiting for, after 7 long months at the shelter, Curry has been adopted!!!! We wish him all the best with his new family, but of course that leaves us with a gaping hole in the writing department.
So began a long and arduous task of choosing the next voice from the Small’s room.
Sugar, Spice, Abby, Luigi, Bowser, Yoshi and Snickers were all immediately ruled out due to their young ages, lack of life experience, and in some cases maturity. Moonmochi, Squiggles, Wiggles, Fluffy and Buster, although wonderful were lacking in Small’s room experience, as they are three of our newer guests. Spaz, our resident gerbil, and Gumble, the resident hamster, are seriously in the running. I am sure they have a lot to offer in the gossip department as their cages are in the prime location right next to the front desk. So, they see all the comings and goings, making them excellent candidates. Lupert, Princess, and Pookie, are also great looking candidates, their maturity, commitment and compassion are second to none as the moms to over a dozen baby pigs this year. Although there is some possibility that Lupert has found a furever home, but the other two definitely have a lot to share. Oreo has been with us since July, so certainly has seniority over some of the other candidates, he is detail orientated, always having to have his litter tray in the center of his cage so he can push his ball all the way around the outer edge of his cage. Baby, dad to some of the babies currently in residence, certainly has life experience, but is quite quiet. So may not be up to the task of relaying daily gossip, comings and goings. Leaving us with the last guinea pig currently in residence, Drumstick, now he is a little charmer. Always at the cage seeing what is happening, looking for a piece of lettuce or treat, and to be honest is not averse to the odd cuddle. Moving on to our rabbits, we do have two brand new rabbits, feisty little guys who I am going to discount due to their newness in our environs. Millie and Cottontail our two baby rabbits again have limited life experience, and both are hoping to go to their furever homes really soon. We wish them all the luck in the world with their new families. Leaving us with Rudy, an absolutely gorgeous larger rabbit, at two years old he has the experience required for this position and he definitely keeps an eye on what is happening in the room.
So to sum it up, we have a gerbil, a hamster, several guinea pigs and a rabbit, all as strong contenders for author of “Musings from the Small’s Room”. The powers that be, and the animals in the smalls room will be conducting more formal interviews for the position this week, and each candidate will be allowed to speak at the upcoming debate. Stay tuned as I have it on good authority that our new author will be make their debut just in time for Thanksgiving.
On a completely different topic I thought I would open your eyes to how much romaine, parsley and carrots our small animals are able to get through. Each animal is treated to a morning and evening fresh treat. If we were to limit them to half a carrot and a leaf of romaine each, twice a day. Then take into account the current resident total, standing at 20 guinea pigs and 5 rabbits, we need approximately 20 carrots and a three head bag of romaine a day to keep everyone fed. If you feel you could donate some fresh produce to us that would be wonderful. Just give the staff a call and they can coordinate with you to drop it by (508-586-2053). Finally, a huge thank you to all those that have donated rabbit food recently, we currently have a great stockpile and will reach out when we are starting to run low.
