Musings from the Smalls Room By Curry (a rather cute guinea pig!)
Life is moving on in the small’s room, we have several new arrivals, meaning it was necessary to move all our cages and pens around so we would all fit!
Moving day in the smalls room is no small undertaking, cages are cleaned, those that can be are stacked on top of each other, using particular care to make sure those piggies who have been known to escape are always placed on the bottom row! Once cleaned the cages were all moved to the far end of the room to free up the long sides of the room for pens. Pens are usually used for guinea pig mom’s and babies who need to be in the smaller barred pens (like mice guinea pig babies can squeeze through the smallest spaces). All our rabbit friends are also in pens so they have space to run around. Howard and Mocha have now moved on to the live with their new families, but two new rabbits are expected later this week.
Now I would like to say that cleaning the rabbits is as simple as scooping up the blankets they all have on the floor and giving it a quick sweep, but let’s face it rabbits poop, and have an uncanny ability to pee everywhere. Now don’t get me wrong we have some rather untidy guinea pigs, but the rabbits can take it to a whole other level. So once the floor is swept, and washed down, pens are replaced, blankets re-laid, housing and litter boxes refilled and finally the room starts to resemble the clean comfortable space we have all grown to love. We all love our space at the shelter, but let’s face it, it isn’t the same a cozy corner in a real home. We can but dream.
As usual the shelter is a hive of activity, this weekend I heard we are having a bake sale with the addition of a little Christmas table, so make sure to stop on by and pick up some goodies as well as gift items and Christmas supplies. A little bird told me that you will be able to pick up some yummy jams and preserves for hostess gifts for the upcoming holidays too. Then the following weekend we are doing pictures with Santa, now I don’t know about you, but pictures with the big guy …. you can’t get more into the season than that!
Now I wanted to give a shout out to all the small animal volunteers. If you follow my musings, you will know that these are the people who come in daily. Who visit with us, feed us treats and, you guessed it clean up our poop. It is a thankless job, but take it from me it is truly appreciated by all of us here. I will send word out to my fellow residents that they need to pay a bit more attention as to where they go to the bathroom. I mean how hard is it not to notice the large litter tray in each and every cage! That being said I would hate for you to get the wrong impression, rabbits and us piggies make wonderful additions to any home, but I wouldn’t want to pull the wool over your eyes in the bathroom department …. and yes you guessed it we are all longing for that furever home if you could just overlook some of our shortcomings.
Please check out all our pictures on the available animal’s section of the website, I have it on good authority there will be new pictures being taken today, so expect to be wowed by those cute little faces.
